Last year, the messy bun beanie hit the internet and everyone went nuts over them.  I liked the idea but couldn’t find a pattern I really wanted to work with.  I tried a few but none made me happy, even the patterns I paid for didn’t cut it.  They were all just too…blah.  So I put the project on hold.

I don’t like this one I made last year

I watched Pinterest and the crochet blogs until finally a few grabbed my attention!  Today, I want to show you the Mommy and Me Messy Bun Hats by Repeat Crafter Me.  I like to call it the Zig Zag Beanie, just because I don’t always plan on making both an adult and child version each time.  That’s also a bit of a mouthful.

So I tried the pattern out first in Caron Simply Soft Teal Zeal and Big Twist Sincerely Grey Denim, that’s what I happened to have on hand at the time.  I really liked it and wanted more!!

Now for these pictures, I was excited to show it off to friends and family.  So I took a few quick photos never expecting to put them on the blog, lol.  I should’ve known better.  So excuse the horrible model taking pictures of herself at work.  I also don’t wear makeup to work or bring a hairbrush.  Great idea, Trudy…

I did take some liberties with the pattern.  I like to use hair ties/ponytail holders in the closure so I incorporated that into my hat.  Anytime it says “chain 30, join to beginning chain, single crochet 34 stitches into circle”, I skip the first two steps and go right into the single crochets around the hair tie.  Just my preference and not everyone likes it that way.

The pattern also calls for the last row of zig zags to be the same color as the brim/band.  I decided I wanted mine to keep alternating a little more and I added a few extra rows of zig zags to give it more length.  I like my ears fully covered when it’s cold.  For the first hat, I did the very last row in half double crochet instead of single, just for emphasis.

For my second try, I used Red Heart Soft in Chocolate and Rose Blush, then added a cute bow.  The bow is not attached, I wanted it removable so I put it on an alligator clip.  Now it can be worn or not and you can move it to where you’d like or even wear it without the hat. On ponytail days, it can be attached to the front at a cute angle.  For bun days, right under the bun. The pattern for the bow is by Lauren from Daisy Cottage Designs.  It was actually the messy bun hat pattern she made the bow for that made me excited to try this again!
