Deena Square – Week 3
Welcome back to my Nuts About Squares CAL project. In case you’re just joining, Esther from It’s all in a Nutshell put together this gorgeous Crochet Along and I jumped in! The squares she chose are amazing and I’m so excited to learn a ton of new techniques! Week three was the Deena Square and this one, I started out not being thrilled about. But as I kept working through it, it moved so fast and turned out so nice, I really liked the design. Notice I said I liked the DESIGN, more to follow.
Anytime time a pattern works up a little faster than I expect it to, I’m happy. I also noticed with these squares, I was gaining speed overall. I’ve mentioned before I believe I’m the world’s slowest crocheter! Even with picking up speed, it took me about 20 minutes to do the last round of teal, consisting of 44 stitches per side. That’s pretty sad, lol. But I wanted to show you the back because I think it’s just as beautiful as the front!
Above is the third square, here’s the first and second:
I also managed to FINALLY get my messed up Spiro Star from Week 2 finished. That one definitely needed a LOT of blocking and even after, it was still a little wonky:
The coloring is slightly different in those pictures, but it’s the same piece. One was taken under lights around midnight, while the second was strictly mid afternoon sun.
So now, I have a confession to make. I hate the colors!! They work, I guess, but it’s not me. I feel like I’m stuck in a muted game of Candy Land or maybe a unicorn threw up on my work, lol. Hey! The crochet version of the Unicorn Frappuccino! Side note: I’ve never tried it, probably never will.
While I was slaving away with hook and yarn to create this technicolor mass of organized knots, this is what my cats were doing. My third, Willow, isn’t shown as she was further down the bed. If I had adjusted to get her picture, they all would’ve moved and ruined it. Though she was seriously in the same position as the other two. Lazy cats! She’s a gray and white Siberian mix (I’m guessing), and when she gets mad (or jealous over the other cats) she can give the MEANEST look.
Gus and CeCe are siblings, while Willow is unrelated. The two below are “the kid’s cats”, as they begged me to keep them after rescuing their litter. The kids named them, the kids loved them as kittens, now the CATS have decided I’m more their speed, and the kids are okay with that. I claimed Willow from the very beginning, she’s yet another rescue.
Back to crochet though. Some of the squares, I absolutely love. The first and third Spiros are my favorites. The Deena’s I hate, and once again the design is wonderful, the amount of color change is just driving me nuts. I’m really not sure how I’m going to feel about the finished afghan. In fact, I’ve already decided I’m giving it away. No idea to who yet, just that I am! I can’t look at it for the rest of my life.
So let’s do a little photo grid so we can get an idea of the finished product:
Okay, so maybe they’re not so horrible once they’re all together. I still don’t think I’ll be keeping this one though. Let me know what you think, yay or nay on the colors?
Anyway, here’s a sneak peek at next week’s square, “Le Vesinet”.
Keep creating. I know I will!
